The Realities of Family Caregiving – Recent Study Results
A recent study, called the ManyFaces of Caregiving Study, was released by the national nonprofit organization Easter Seals, with the support of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). In that study, it was shown that more people are being asked to care for elderly loved ones, and that they are having to do this at earlier ages. There are two reasons for this. People are living longer lives, and they are having children later in life.
When older people have children, that raises the risk of those children being younger when the parents start needing care. Additionally, those parents may live into their 80s or 90s, because new treatment and medication options allow people to have longer lives, even if the quality of those lives is not always that good. While having parents living longer can be a great thing for children and grandchildren, how to help and care for aging parents can be stressful and upsetting, especially when coupled with a number of other obligations.
For many of these adult children, there is simply more to the caregiving role than they expect, and they find that they have trouble doing everything they need to do for their own family and their aging parents. That’s where a home workers can come into the picture. Elderly care workers are in higher demand today, and will likely continue to be in demand for the foreseeable future. Adult children turn to these caregivers to handle their aging parents, because they have families and jobs that they can’t just walk away from to provide that care.
That also gives the aging parent an opportunity to continue to live in their home, so they don’t have to leave a place they feel comfortable with to move in with adult children or go to a facility.
